Pistachio – A Nutritional Goldmine In Your Diet

We already know that nuts are extremely beneficial for human health, and everyone conscious of their body’s well-being has already made them a regular part of their diet. But some nuts deserve a special mention.

Pistachios were one of the only two nuts mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible (the other were almonds). If that doesn’t speak enough to their reputation, here is another fact: pistachios were once considered to be a royal nut. Legend has it that the Queen of Sheba proclaimed pistachios were the food of kings only, and ordinary people were forbidden to even grow this tree.

People have been consuming pistachios since 7,000 BC. And now, it is not only a popular, healthy snack but also a versatile ingredient in many recipes.

Today, let’s take a closer look at American pistachios and find out what we truly get when we crack open its hard shell.

Getting to know American Pistachios

Though we tend to call pistachios “nuts”, this is not botanically correct. They are, in fact, edible seeds of the Pistacia vera tree, which thrives perfectly in the dry climate of the American west.

These green, slightly sweet nuts (or seeds, as we have learned) came to the United States in the mid-19th century and their commercial production began in the 1970s. Nowadays, the USA is a world leader in pistachio production. According to Statista, the production volume of US in-shell basis pistachios amounted to over 570 thousand metric tons in the 2020/21 marketing year. The entire American pistachio industry is concentrated in California, Arizona, and New Mexico.

American pistachios are distinguished by their relatively large size and uniformity due to the strict grading standards. Advanced production technologies, innovative harvesting methods, and growing techniques make the US number one when it comes to pistachios.

Health Benefits of Pistachios

Considering their content profile, pistachios have the right to be referred to as a nutritional powerhouse.

To begin with, pistachios are a source of complete protein, meaning that it contains an adequate amount of all nine essential amino acids. 100 grams of raw nuts supply your body with 20 grams of protein. It is a crucial component in building muscles and maintaining normal body function.

Pistachios are also particularly rich in immune boosting antioxidants, including lutein, beta-carotene and gamma-tocopherol. Magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, and iron are only a small part of the list of what pistachios have to offer. Due to their high concentration of B vitamins, pistachios may reduce stress and lower blood pressure.  They also have anti-inflammatory properties, and may lower bad cholesterol levels and help clean your heart’s blood vessels when combined with a healthy diet.

Moreover, pistachios appear to be a go-to product when trying to lose some weight. While being comparably lower in calories and fat content than most other nuts, their high fiber and protein content can make you feel full for a longer time. This may help you eat less throughout the day and lose weight as a result. And make sure to use the following little lifehack: buying pistachios in their shells slows down your eating, hence you may feel satisfied sooner.

Pistachios’ culinary uses

Not only are pistachios packed with health-promoting components, but they can also serve as an ingredient in your cooking experiments. These nuts will add a splash of color to your dishes and can be used in a variety of ways:

  • As a salad garnish. Pistachios, either whole or chopped, are often sprinkled over green salads. These nuts can also be puréed and mixed with oil and herbs to make a creamy salad dressing.
  • For sauces. Ground pistachios are popular as a base for sauces, like pesto-alternatives or yogurt-based sauces.
  • To make nut butter. Pistachio is the new peanut when it comes to nut butters.
  • In different types of baking. For example, ground pistachios can be added to bread dough, which will give it a thicker texture and enrich it with extra protein.
  • In desserts. We all know and genuinely love those delicious green-colored desserts. Yes, pistachio flavoring brings everything from ice cream to cheesecakes to an absolutely new level. Chopped pistachios are commonly mixed into or sprinkled atop cakes, cookies, truffles, and pastries. And the options don’t end there. You can also try adding pistachios as a crust to your favorite oven-baked fish, or as a topping for your morning granola, or even on a pizza.

Ultimately, pistachios can always be enjoyed on their own as a convenient, tasty, and healthy snack. Raw, roasted, or salted nuts can be carried along to work or school to satisfy your cravings.

With all of that said, it is now clear why pistachios have been praised by people almost since the dawn of time. These tiny nutritional goldmines are not only capable of enriching your usual menu with brighter colors and flavor, but also have a terrific impact on your health.
