American Almonds – Yummy Superfood

Almond milk, almond butter, almond croissants – almonds, almonds, almonds…

They seem to have flooded today’s food culture. And this is nothing to be surprised about. The almond has an impressive nutritional profile and unique vibrant taste, which it maintains in whatever form it is consumed. And in most cases, the United States is to thank for that.

Today, we take a closer look at American almond production and the reasons for all the commotion around this superfood.

Getting to Know Almonds

Almonds are in fact edible seeds of the almond tree, one of the most ancient, domesticated crops. Like the pit of a peach, almonds ripen in a hard shell, covered with a layer of fruit, which eventually dries out, exposing the “nut”. Almonds have a crunchy and mildly oily texture and a naturally sweet taste.

They are rich in healthy unsaturated fats and different minerals. In the long list of essential vitamin content, vitamin E stands out, making these nuts an antioxidant powerhouse. Almonds also have a positive effect on blood sugar and cholesterol levels as well as on stabilizing blood pressure. Being an excellent source of fiber, the nut facilitates the movement of things through your digestive tract.

Moreover, almonds may be of great help in normalizing body weight and reducing hunger. A handful of almonds, which equals about 28 grams, contains one-eighth of the recommended daily protein intake.

American Almond Industry

The United States is responsible for 80% of the global almond production. Thanks to the highest almond quality parameters, the U.S. continues to hold its position of world leadership.

California commands the lion’s share of the industry. The state is famous for its ideal growing climate for this healthy nut. The combination of hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters is the key factor in maintaining such a steady supply of California almonds. There are about 30 major varieties of almonds grown in Golden State orchards, with 10 of them representing 70% of the total production. Such diversity can satisfy a variety of taste requirements and provide a wide range of opportunities for the nut’s use.

The growth and harvesting processes of American almonds are carried out with care for the environment and consumers’ well-being. Sustainability and quality assurance are considered both in the cultivation of almonds in California orchards and in the nut processing and packaging steps.

The Use of Almonds

American almonds are extremely easy to enjoy – just grab a handful and you’re good to go. Due to its pleasant taste and an impressive nutritional value, almonds make a perfect, healthy snack that will satisfy your daily cravings.

They can also make your breakfast more fulfilling: add almonds to your morning oats or granola and get a perfect, healthy combo.

The nut can also serve as an ingredient in different dishes, both sweet and savory. It can add some extra protein and healthy fats to your salad or become a crunchy element when cooking fish or meat.

But numerous dessert recipes is where the almond’s potential can be realized to the fullest. These nuts often are the star of sweet treats like muffins, pies, tarts, cookies and whatever else your imagination can come up with. You are welcome to try one such recipe on our website and surprise your loved ones with an almond tart.

Almonds have experienced a new spin in their reputation with the global rise of health, nutrition and plant-based diet trends. Gluten-free flour, dairy-free milk and nut butter are made out of almonds and attract not only vegans in their circle of fans.

Now, there is no remaining doubt that American almonds’ popularity is well-deserved. As they are produced in compliance with strict requirements imposed by the American almond industry, these healthy nuts are a priceless source of healthy nutrients essential for the human body.
